Broadening my perspective in Cambodia

The people, the place, the culture, the experiences! This placement allowed me to truly immerse myself in an unfamiliar culture, country, and healthcare system. I appreciate how this experience has provided me with a broader perspective on physiotherapy interventions through the variety of patient settings.
I had the privilege of mainly exploring the pediatric side of physiotherapy with Grace House Community Centre (GHCC), the staff and students of which I cannot speak of highly enough. I was able to utilise my musculoskeletal skills with a home visit in the local village and further explored the rehabilitation side of physiotherapy by spending time at the Provincial Physical Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) working with amputees.
One of the most valuable experiences was furthering my communication skillset. Having had no previous experience with the local language (Khmer), my use of non-verbal communication and cueing was challenged at times, and I had never experienced working with an interpreter prior to this trip. I had the opportunity to work closely with Vichhay and the interpreters Chornai (Lin) and Kull from TravelED Asia. Their patience with me trying to grasp the language was exceptional.
We had a lot of laughs together and a few tears on departure. We have developed friendships that will last a lifetime, and I look forward to seeing them again, where they can correct my Khmer and I – their Australian Slang! Vichhay, Chornai (Lin) and Kull from TravelED Asia were all essential in facilitating a positive experience both at placement, and in my free time. I enjoyed exploring Siem Reap and beyond. They were all very helpful in giving me advice on things to do outside of placement.
Undertaking this learning experience allowed me to challenge myself to be flexible, resourceful, and facilitated the further development of my cross-cultural skills. I now appreciate the little thing in life that I previously took for granted regarding access to resources. It was such a valuable experience and after 5 weeks I felt a deep connection with the Cambodian community. Cambodian people are intelligent, resourceful, kind, friendly, helpful and taught me a lot in my short time.
I came back to Australia having formed strong friendships with the Cambodian people and other volunteers that I met along the way. Doing this placement was one of the best things I have ever done – I can’t wait to go back!
