This Program collaborates with local health centers and non-government organisations (NGO) to provide skills exchange for better healthcare services to the rural communities.
Within a 1 hour drive, all the organizations we work with provide free or low-cost medical services to the local communities. Prevalent health problems in the area are infected wounds, diarrhea, tapeworm, salmonella, chronic malnutrition, hepatitis, typhoid, tuberculosis, and dengue fever. A typical day may see between 30–60 patients; some of these will be quite sick or wounded. However, others are curious and come for a general check up and to see the foreigner nurses. The childbirth rate is between 5–7 per month.
Working alongside local experts is the best way to understand more about the Cambodian health system. It gives everyone involved the opportunity to share different ideas in terms of treatment, health education and exposes Cambodian health workers to a western system. This also allows patients extra time to engage with visiting university students and better understand their treatment while the local team focuses on the treatment plan. Research and collecting resources are always a huge extra benefit for the centers and their communities.
We currently run the placement in collaboration with government runs centers and NGO around Siem Reap, Cambodia.
We facilitate University Placements year-round, and will tailor dates to meet your University’s requirements.
